The Contractor Route
Most precision technology can be hired rather than bought: many contractors already run GPS guidance, section control and variable-rate spreaders as standard, priced per hectare. Rates vary by region and job, so we quote none here — ask your contractor what their existing kit already does. Often the answer is "more than you thought".
Entry-Level Systems
On the 2026 UK market, this money buys a complete RTK autosteer retrofit — touchscreen display, GNSS receiver with RTK correction (2.5 cm accuracy), electric steering-wheel motor and wheel-angle sensor. Real dealer prices: complete kits from £2,950, the FJD AT2 full kit at £5,994. AHDB's cost:benefit work put "basic systems" at ~£4,500 (it never itemised them) — and found benefits beat costs on cereal farms above roughly 75 hectares. The correction subscription that makes the receiver worth having is a separate, yearly cost — GPS for farming in the UK has the published UK subscription prices.
Sophisticated Systems
On the 2026 UK market, this money buys autosteer plus variable-rate capability — a retrofit ISOBUS VRA controller on the drill or spreader (£4,562 + £1,350 fitting), an ISOBUS display (£1,995) and the autosteer kit itself, stacking to AHDB's £11,500–£16,000 "sophisticated systems" bracket. Break-even sits above 200–300 hectares of cereals — the rung where a measured trial year matters most before committing.
What Each Item Costs, Line by Line
The ladder above is the AHDB view of whole systems. DEFRA publishes something different and just as useful: an expected average cost for every item it was willing to grant-fund, item by item, in the FETF 2026 productivity list. These are pre-grant averages — FETF paid 40–50% of them — and real quotes vary by spec and dealer.

Read down that list and the cheapest item is the one whose saving does not depend on agronomy working out: a light bar cuts overlap whatever the season does. What that £809 does and does not buy in accuracy terms is on our agricultural GPS page, alongside the RTK tier above it. The five-figure end earns its place against a named, costed problem — a herbicide bill, a blackgrass patch — which is something the cheaper rungs have to show you first.
What the Published Evidence Says About Payback
The most rigorous public UK payback data comes from AHDB's five-year precision farming experiment on cereal crops. Its headline findings:
- £22/ha average benefit from spatially variable nitrogen — in the project's trial year 2000, 7 of 8 treatment zones gave a positive economic return.
- 12%–52% of field area responded positively to variable-rate nitrogen, depending on field and year — in every field studied, part of the land was getting the wrong dose under uniform treatment.
- Nitrogen surplus cut by roughly one third — fertiliser applied but not used by the crop fell sharply under variable-rate management.
- Break-even at ~75ha for basic (~£4,500) systems on cereal farms; 200–300ha for sophisticated (£11,500–£16,000) systems.
- Separately, industry trials of variable-rate fertiliser and spray commonly report 15–30% input savings on suitable fields, and GPS guidance alone is typically credited with 5–10% savings in inputs and fuel — see our complete guide for context.
- The honest caveat, from the same evidence: fields that do not vary much have little for precision farming to find. Map your variation (free) before buying anything.
The newer, more sobering result (ADAS, 2026)
A study published in July 2026 — five years of trials on 11 commercial UK farms, run by ADAS in the European Journal of Agronomy and funded by Innovate UK, DEFRA and AHDB — found that in-field variable rate nitrogen delivered an average of just 0.05 t/ha more yield and about £10/ha more profit. Not nothing, and not the step change the brochures describe.
The same trials found the variation itself is real and large: within single fields, yields differed by up to 2.5 t/ha and optimal nitrogen rates by over 200 kg/ha. The researchers’ own conclusion was that the greatest value of variable rate nitrogen is likely to come from getting closer to the field average optimum rate, rather than from varying the rate across the field. Put plainly: knowing your fields pays before spreading differently across them does — which is the argument for the free rung coming first, not a reason to skip the ladder.

The drone-spraying legal reality (UK, 2026)
HSE treats drone application of Plant Protection Products as aerial spraying: there are currently no commercial authorisations — on-label or EAMU — permitting pesticides to be applied by drone in the UK; use is limited to a small number of trials permits. What IS legal today: spreading non-PPP materials — slug pellets, seed, granular fertiliser and biological products — subject to CAA permissions for the aircraft (drones over 25 kg need an operational authorisation). If a seller quotes you a spray drone for pesticide work in the UK, ask them for the HSE authorisation first.
Grants: What Is Open Now
FETF 2026 — closed; consolidated offer from 2027
The 2026 Farming Equipment and Technology Fund offered £1,000–£25,000 per theme (up to £75,000 across its three themes) from a £50 million budget, with precision-relevant items including EID readers and irrigation sensors. Its application window closed on 12 May 2026, and DEFRA has confirmed it was the final standalone round — from 2027 the strongest elements of the grant schemes are planned to merge into a single consolidated offer. SFI26 — open in windows
The Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 opened its first application window on 30 June 2026 (£60 million of a £240 million budget), aimed first at smaller farms and farms without an existing ELM revenue agreement; Window 2 opens in September 2026 for all farmers. What We Cannot Tell You
There is no current official UK price survey for precision farming equipment. Kit prices vary by brand, spec, dealer and season — anyone quoting you a single "cost of precision farming" figure without asking about your farm is selling something. The AHDB system-cost figures above come from its published cereals research and are useful as orders of magnitude and for the size thresholds, not as a 2026 shopping list.
