FETF: The Farming Equipment and Technology Fund

The 2026 round is closed and was the last of its kind. Here is exactly what it funded, what every precision item was worth, and the verified position on 2027. Last updated 31 August 2026.

FETF 2026ClosedOpened 17 March 2026, closed midday 12 May 2026Applications are shut. Successful applicants received funding agreements from June 2026.
FETF 2027Not announcedNo opening date publishedDEFRA has said FETF will not return in its current form. A combined, simplified offer is planned from 2027 — nothing more is confirmed.

Checked automatically against GOV.UK: the FETF 2026 scheme page currently reads closed, as of 14 September 2026. When a round closes, GOV.UK redirects its page to a “closed” copy — that redirect is what this reads, so the line above is not a claim anyone has to remember to update.

If you came here searching for a FETF 2026 or FETF 2027 deadline, that is the honest answer, and it has not changed since DEFRA's March 2026 statement. What has not stopped is capital funding generally — three schemes are open or opening, listed further down this page with their real deadlines.

Every Precision-Farming Item FETF 2026 Funded

The full productivity list ran to 70 items across seven categories. These are the ones that buy precision capability — guidance, variable rate, sensing and autonomy — with the exact figures DEFRA published. "Expected cost" is DEFRA's fixed reference price; the grant is a share of that, not of what you actually pay.

Code Item Expected cost Rate Grant Score
Guidance & steering
FETF46 GPS light bar £809 40% £323 54
FETF47 Assisted steer system (retro fitted for older tractors) £1,911 40% £764 49
Variable rate & application control
FETF50 Retro-fitted Variable rate controller for older seed drills, sprayers and fertiliser spreaders £4,863 40% £1,945 57
FETF602 Camera guided variable rate control £19,500 50% £9,750 72

FETF51 Retro fitted yield monitoring for combines and crop harvesters £3,068 40% £1,227 61
FETF214 Soil health monitor package £543 40% £217 56
FETF213 Remote soil moisture sensing £796 40% £318 56
FETF118 Digital weather station £1,804 40% £721 55
FETF25 Irrigation sensor £1,195 40% £478 64
FETF415 Irrigation controller for rain guns £3,013 40% £1,205 58
FETF401 Remote substrate sensors with datalogger £798 40% £319 60
FETF402 Tractor mounted sensor for precision orchard management £21,500 40% £8,600 72
FETF117 Crop storage sensor system £4,818 40% £1,927 55
FETF29 Real time inline nutrient analysis of slurry £21,606 50% £10,803 78
FETF74 EID panel reader for sheep £1,585 50% £792 1,910
Robotics & autonomy
FETF218 Robotic drill and guided hoe £62,566 50% £25,000 90
FETF603 Robotic platforms and carts £29,800 40% £11,920 74
FETF601 Autonomous grain monitoring robot £24,000 40% £9,600 65

Two things worth reading off that table. First, the cheap end is very cheap: a soil health monitor package, remote soil moisture sensing and a GPS light bar were grant-supported at £217, £318 and £323 — entry-level precision capability for a few hundred pounds of your own money. Second, score and grant value are not correlated: the £217 soil monitor scored 56, only four points below the £4,198 boom height control at 60. Under the scoring rule below, that mattered more than the money did.

Every item carried a written specification the equipment had to meet — read it on GOV.UK before buying anything on the strength of a code alone. The full list, including that specification, is searchable below.

Synced from the GOV.UK Content API, last checked 14 September 2026. Source lists: productivity, slurry, animal health and welfare. Scores are only comparable within a theme — the animal health and welfare list is scored on a different scale entirely.

How Applications Were Ranked

FETF was competitive, not first-come-first-served. Every productivity item carried a score up to 100, set on three criteria: productivity benefit, environmental benefit, and level of adoption by the industry — the last one rewarding items the industry had not already taken up.

RPA scored an application by adding the scores of the distinct items in it, then dividing by the number of distinct items. Duplicates of the same item counted once. Success then depended on that score against the number and value of applications received.

  • The average is the trap. Because the score was a mean, adding a low-scoring item to a strong application lowered it. Applying for the 90-point robotic drill and guided hoe alone beat pairing it with a 49-point assisted steer system, which averaged to 70.
  • Quantity was free. Applying for two of the same item did not dilute the score — only distinct items counted — so scaling up one high-scoring item was the strongest shape an application could take.
  • Precision items scored well. Camera-guided and robotic equipment sat at 72–90; older-technology retrofits sat at 49–61.

What FETF Was

A capital equipment grant for England, run by the Rural Payments Agency: you picked items from a published list, and the grant paid a fixed share of a fixed expected cost for each one.

Three Themes

Productivity, Slurry, and Animal Health and Welfare. You could apply once to each theme, and each was assessed separately — so a productivity application could succeed while a slurry one failed.

Grant Value Per Theme

Every application had to total between £1,000 and £25,000 of grant. Across all three themes that gave a ceiling of £75,000 for one business.

The Grant Rate

Each item paid 40% or 50% — but of a fixed expected cost set by DEFRA, not of your invoice. Pay more than the expected cost and you carry the difference.

Agreements Issued

From the £50 million 2026 round: roughly 3,600 in animal health and welfare, 2,200 in productivity and 900 in slurry management. The window was extended once before closing.

Who Could Apply

The business had to be based and registered in England, and be one of: a farmer, a horticulturalist, a forestry owner, or a contractor carrying out services for them. Contractor eligibility is the part most often missed — it opened guidance and variable-rate kit to the businesses doing the field work across several farms.

Having previously received FETF money, or money from the Countryside Productivity Small Grants Scheme, did not rule a business out.

The Animal Health and Welfare theme was narrower: only businesses farming beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, laying chickens or broiler chickens (including rearing and breeding units) could apply to it. The Productivity and Slurry themes carried no such livestock restriction.

One application per theme, per business, and the value of each had to land between £1,000 and £25,000 of grant — below that floor it was not a valid application at all.

What Replaces FETF

Announcing the 2026 round, DEFRA stated that it would be the final standalone round of FETF in its current form, and that from 2027 it planned to bring the strongest elements of its grant schemes together, simplify the application process, and make funding easier to access.

That sentence is the whole of the official commitment. As of 31 August 2026, no name, structure, budget, item list, eligibility rule or opening date has been published for the replacement.

What the 2026 round tells you about the next one: roughly 7,000 agreements came out of a £50 million pot, and the window had to be extended once. A consolidated scheme drawing on several predecessors is unlikely to be less oversubscribed than that.

The useful preparation is unglamorous — keep a costed wishlist tied to a specific problem on your holding, with quotes, specifications and the field data that justifies the purchase. Windows open and close faster than a buying decision can be made from scratch. Our fuller write-up: FETF 2027: what we actually know.

What You Can Apply For Instead

Capital support did not stop when FETF closed. Checked 31 August 2026 — verify on gov.uk before relying on a date.

Capital Grants 2026

£225 million, open now. Six groups covering boundaries, trees and orchards; water quality; air quality; natural flood management; assessments; and improvements. Caps of £25,000 for the air, water and flood groups and £35,000 for boundaries, trees and orchards, one application per Single Business Identifier. There is no closing date — it shuts when the money is gone, and 75% was allocated within days of opening. What we found in the guidance.

SFI26 Window 2

Expected to open from 22 September 2026. DEFRA's wording is “we expect”, not a fixed date. It has added £50 million to Window 2 and says the unspent Window 1 budget rolls into it, taking the scheme to £290 million for this financial year — so the window's own total is not published. Open to all farmers, rather than the narrower Window 1 group. Several paid actions cover nutrient management and soil sampling — the data foundation precision farming runs on. Window 1 outcome and what changes.

ADOPT Fund Round 9

£50,000–£200,000, closes 11am on 7 October 2026. Farmer-led trials: you run the idea on your own holding, in real field conditions, with the farm business leading the project. A separate £2,500 grant is available towards the cost of help with the application. The rules and the timing catch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the FETF grant open in 2026?

No. FETF 2026 opened on 17 March 2026 and closed at midday on 12 May 2026, after a single extension. DEFRA has confirmed it was the final standalone round in its current form.

Will there be a FETF 2027?

Not under that name, on current information. DEFRA plans a combined, simplified grant offer from 2027, but as of 31 August 2026 has published no name, budget, item list or opening date. Any page quoting a "FETF 2027 deadline" is guessing.

How much was the FETF grant worth?

£1,000 to £25,000 per theme, up to £75,000 across all three. Each item paid 40% or 50% of a fixed expected cost published by DEFRA — not a percentage of your invoice.

Who could apply?

Businesses based and registered in England: farmers, horticulturalists, forestry owners and their contractors. Previous FETF and Countryside Productivity Small Grants recipients were still eligible. The Animal Health and Welfare theme was limited to beef, dairy, sheep, pig and poultry farms.

What precision farming equipment did FETF cover?

GPS light bars, retrofit assisted steer, retrofit variable-rate controllers, camera-guided variable rate, inter-row and spot sprayers, retrofit yield monitoring, soil health and moisture sensing, digital weather stations, irrigation sensors and controllers, and robotic drills, carts and grain monitors. The full table with grant amounts is above.

How was an application scored?

Each item scored up to 100 on productivity benefit, environmental benefit and level of industry adoption. RPA averaged the scores of the distinct items in the application — so a weak item dragged a strong application down, while extra quantities of the same item cost nothing.

Can I still claim on a 2026 agreement?

If you hold a funding agreement from the 2026 round, the claim process runs through the Farming Investment Fund service at rpagrants.defra.gov.uk. Deadlines are set in your individual agreement — read that, not this page.

What is open right now?

Capital Grants 2026 (£225m, closes when the money runs out), SFI26 Window 2 (expected from 22 September 2026, £290m across the scheme this financial year) and ADOPT Round 9 (£50k–£200k, closes 7 October 2026). Details in the section above.
