What the NVZ Register Keeps For You

The first two columns are DEFRA's rules, word for word where it matters. The third is what the program does about each one.

What the rules askBy whenWhat Dynamik Agri does
Update your field records after sowing, spreading fertiliser or harvesting a cropWithin 1 weekKeeps the day it happened and the day you wrote it down, shows how much of the week is used, and marks anything written down late
Record the yield of any arable crop that had nitrogen fertiliserWithin 1 week of finding it outThe same one-week clock
Livestock manure brought onto or sent off the holding: type, amount, date, total nitrogen, the other party's name and address, and a contingency plan if it is not acceptedWithin 1 weekOne record per movement, with the other party's details and the plan if it is turned away
The livestock summary for the previous calendar year: holding area, livestock, days each animal spent on the holding, and the nitrogen they producedBy 30 AprilAdds up the nitrogen from DEFRA's standard figures, sets it against the 170 kg N per hectare limit, and prints the summary or saves it as a PDF
Keep all records of your fertiliser useAt least 5 yearsEverything stays in one file on your computer

Nothing here has to be sent to anyone. The records are kept, and shown if the Environment Agency inspects your farm. The one exception is a grassland derogation: those farms send their fertilisation account to the Environment Agency by 30 April, and that is not in the program yet.

The Slurry Storage Check

The rules ask for enough storage to hold what the stock produces over the closed months: 1 October to 1 April (6 months) for pigs and poultry, and 1 October to 1 March (5 months) for cattle, sheep, goats, deer and horses. The program sets the capacity of your store against what goes into it, rain included, over that period, so you see the gap before an inspector does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there software for keeping NVZ records?

Yes. Dynamik Agri's NVZ register keeps field records, manure movements, the livestock summary due by 30 April and a slurry storage check on your own Windows PC, and counts the one-week deadlines for you. It cannot be downloaded yet; register your interest and the link is emailed to you the day it opens.

How long do NVZ records have to be kept?

DEFRA's guidance says you must keep all records of your fertiliser use for at least 5 years.

Do NVZ records have to be sent to anyone?

No. They are kept, and shown if the Environment Agency inspects your farm. The livestock summary for the previous calendar year has to be completed by 30 April, and kept. Farms with a grassland derogation are the exception: they send their fertilisation account to the Environment Agency by 30 April.
